Writer and Autodidact
Dear John and Rosianna,
January 17, 2019
In May I will graduate from Grinnell College with a degree in English, and working as an executive assistant at Complexly would be a dream job for me. I believe that my skills and experience are exactly what you’re looking for.
I’m a writer. My early education, homeschooling followed by boarding school in New Hampshire, emphasized reading and writing. I’ve also been focused on writing at Grinnell. I’m so lucky to have studied under Alissa Nutting and Dean Bakopolous, both authors I admire. A few months ago the online magazine Brain Mill Press: Voices published my essay “Believing Takes Practice.”
Over the past few years, I’ve worked at four great and varied museums. I love museums. During my homeschooling years, museums and online resources were essential to my education. In the summer of 2017, I worked at the Indianapolis Museum of Art where I fell in love with both the IMA (now Newfields) and the city. I interned with the Historic Site Manager, Jean-Luc Howell, allowing me to work with people in multiple departments on a variety of projects at once.
As I look forward to my graduation, I have a lot of questions about the next stage of my life. Where shall I live? Should I adopt a pet? How will I make money to buy all the pens I want? I also have quite a few answers. I know I don’t want to move back home, and I know I want to live in a small Midwestern city. I know I’m going to write a lot, no matter what I do, and I know I’m good at it. I know I’m interested in new and creative ways to learn. And I know I’m going to stay super organized through it all thanks to my trusty bullet journal. Also, I’m good at making phone calls.
I’d relish discussing this opportunity further with you. You can reach me by phone at (508) 572-4745 or by email at wakemanm@grinnell.edu.
Not just a penny,
Millicent Wakeman
